30 Years of dedication to Antonio Stradivari

Since 1988 I have been working intensively with stringed instruments and, in particular, with the greatest of all violin makers: Antonio Stradivari.

Even since childhood, I have been fascinated by the violin, later by the viola, and it has been my good fortune to be born into a musical family.

When making music with my siblings and my father, Karl Thöne (composer and student of virtuoso violinist Tibor Varga in Detmold, Germany),

the string quartet played a very special role for me. Thirty years ago, after my viola studies, I went into business for myself;

together with my then-business partner, piano expert Ludger de Graaff, I began trading in stringed instruments and pianos.

A collection of instruments crafted by the legendary Antonio Stradivari fully researched, compiled, and photographed in such a high quality has never been published before

Three hundred well-certified instruments have been meticulously and expertly photographed by some of the world’s best photographers.

As the books measure 320 mm by 450 mm, every detail of the beautiful instruments is reproduced in life-size including the cellos,

which reach an extent of approximately 960 mm by 450 mm. The printing technique chosen for the reproductions makes use of a special varnishing

to preserve and enhance the beauty of the instruments. The collection is divided into eight volumes of around 2667 pages with a weight of 50 kg.

One hundred twenty-eight well-certified instruments have been meticulously and expertly photographed by one of the world’s best photographers.

As the books measure 300mm by 460 mm, every detail of the beautiful instruments (violins and violas) is reproduced in life size.

The printing technique chosen for the reproductions makes use of a special varnishing to preserve and enhance the beauty of the instruments.

Each of the four volumes offers a cross-section view of the violin-making history of these two important schools and allows detailed comparison studies with the help of measurements and CT scans.

wonderful photographs of different instruments built by celebrated French master violin maker Jean Baptiste Vuillaume, including models by

Stradivari, Guarneri, Maggini and Amati in life-size. CT and X-ray scans as well as exact measurements and labels complete this unique masterpiece.

The work, produced and edited by Jost Thoene Verlag, includes a foreword by Bernard Millant †, Christoph Landon and Serge Boyer as well as essays by

Stefan-Peter Greiner and Florian Leonhard in German, English and French. There are only a few copies left.
