In dealing with instruments more than three hundred years old, we are seldom able to trace an unbroken line of ownership that begins in the craftsman’s workshop. However, we appear to have just that where this violin is concerned. It was manufactured by Stradivari in 1706, and was probably bought directly from the luthier by the distinguished English violinist and composer William Corbett (1680–1748) in around 1711.
