Antonio Stradivari (violin) Goldman, Milstein – 1716

This violin from Stradivari’s ‘Golden Period’ still bears its original label that reads: ‘Antonius Stradivarius Cremonensis Faciebat Anno 1716’ and is named after two of its past owners, a Mr. Goldman, who Ernest N. Doring described as ‘an amateur violinist’ and Henri Pigaillem as the famous banker and collector Henry Goldman, son of the German-born American businessman Marcus Goldman (1821–1904), founder of the Goldman Sachs investment bank. The second name of the instrument comes from the famous Ukrainianborn American violinist Nathan Mironovich Milstein (1903–1992), who studied with two renowned violinists, conductors and composers, the Hungarian Leopold Auer (1845–1930) and the Belgian Eugène Ysaÿe (1858–1931). The ‘Goldman’ violin was also called ‘Maria Teresa’ for some time, apparently because Mr. N. M. Milstein’s second wife and daughter both bore.
